Why most SaaS MVPs fail before launch (and the 3 that saved mine)

After shipping six products to market, I've seen the same three patterns kill MVPs: building features instead of hypotheses, underestimating the billing complexity, and no exit strategy for technical debt.

Every failed MVP I've dissected dies the same way: the team built a product, but never an experiment. The code is rarely the problem — the missing hypothesis is.

  • 1. Build the hypothesis, not the feature list.
  • 2. Charge real money before writing real code.
  • 3. Pick the stack for the next 18 months, not the first 6 weeks.

The billing pattern deserves its own warning. Teams scope 'payments' as a form field and discover in month three that subscriptions, proration, dunning and refunds are their own engineering discipline. If your MVP has recurring revenue, budget 20% of the build for it. You will use every hour.

None of this means 'never build.' It means build the thing that would prove you wrong fastest. Every product I've shipped that survived launch was the one where we were closest to being embarrassed by our own assumption.
